Primary Gate Test: GATE programs are highly motivating learning opportunities for students who have extraordinary academic scope or are creatively talented.

Primary Gate Test: GATE programs are of  high demand and are very competitive, give your child the advantage of a My Academy fully qualified tutor. My Academy offers a range of workshops to assist your student with the GATE programs.

GATE Creative Writing Workshop

The Creative Writing workshops are tailored towards the needs of Year 5 students sitting the GATE test and Selective Schools Scholarships.

What does My Academy’s GATE Creative Writing Workshops offer?

The Creative Writing workshops are a great way to enhance your child’s general writing skills that are invaluable in school. The creative writing workshops have been split over four days with each day covering the major areas of creative writing: Character, Setting, Plot and Dialogue.

Students will participate in fun drama and creative writing activities to encourage original story ideas and explore character, plot and description. They will work both individually and as a group to improvise original ideas and create written narrative pieces. Students will also be given the opportunity to share and discuss their work with the group.

How My Academy’s GATE Creative Writing Workshops can help

Students will only have a very short amount of time in the exams to show their creative writing skills and therefore being able to master the keys areas will enable them to write more confidently in the GATE and scholarship exams. With so many students sitting the GATE test, it can be very hard to stand out from the crowd.

Our program will look at various ways in which students can add detail and written features to their writing that interests and impresses the reader. Importantly, many of the skills and strategies we will cover also benefit students in their general schooling, and not just for the test.

When do the GATE Creative Writing Workshops run?

You can choose the creative writing workshops that you would like your child to attend. Although it is possible to do just one area we would recommend doing all four days as it is then a complete overview of creative writing.

  • Creative Writing – Character – Day 1 – 17th April 2017
  • Creative Writing – Plot – Day 2 – 18th April 2017
  • Creative Writing – Setting & Description – Day 3 – 19th April 2017
  • Creative Writing – Dialogue – Day 4 – 20th April 2017

The Creative writing workshops run by a qualified teacher in the April school holidays and are limited to 8 students per group.

If you would like your child to work on any writing skills at other times, please do contact us and we will be able to arrange a suitable time for you.

GATE Reading comprehension and Maths problem solving Workshops for Year 5 students

Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension has often been seen as that easy thing to do in school where the student simply reads a text and answers the questions.  However, reading comprehension is not that simple for students wishing to join a Gifted and Talented Extension program!

The reading comprehension questions mainly focus on inference and the ability to interpret the meaning behind the words.  When was the last time your child sat and read poetry and completely understood all of the metaphors?  In order to be fully competent in reading comprehension it is vital that the reader can understand everything in the text; the literal, implied and inferred meanings.  This is not only fantastic for preparation for the GATE exam but it will also help with general reading comprehension skills in school.

The Reading Comprehension Workshops cover the fundamentals of reading different genres and gaining the much needed understanding of texts. The students will be able to interpret the metaphors and know the difference between literal meaning and when the writer is just trying to paint a picture.  The students will experience a range of texts and work on developing inferential skills ready to tackle any questions that the GATE exam may have.

Maths Problem Solving

By the time students reach Year 5 they are all more than capable of using the main Maths operations – adding, multiplying, dividing and subtracting.  Applying these methods to complex problems can often prove to be more than tricky.

Reading the Maths problems carefully and knowing how to interpret what is being asked is a key skill in Maths and is not only valuable for GATE preparation but also in everyday Maths in school.  The GATE exam and is only word problems and there will be many multi-step problems to work through at speed.  It is important that students can read the questions and understand what Maths operations to use quickly.  The Maths Workshops cover problem solving skills and strategies for best tackling those tricky wording issues.

The students will experience a range of different Maths questions that cover many different aspects of Maths.  The National Curriculum now ensures that all aspects of Maths operations are covered each year and these problems will enhance the students understanding of the operations and how they apply them to problem solving.

Within the Maths and Reading Comprehension Workshops the students will do example questions in, the style of the GATE questions, in short timed conditions as well as look at exam strategies and techniques. These GATE exam workshops are run by a qualified teacher in the July Holidays and are limited to 8 in a group.

Day 1 – Reading Comprehension – 10th July 2017 – 10am – 12pm

Day 2 – Reading Comprehension – 11th July 2017 – 10am – 12pm

Day 3 – Maths Problem Solving – 12th July 2017 – 10am – 12pm

GATE Mock Exams

The GATE mock exam will run the students through the 4 areas that are examined in the order they are sat.

What does My Academy’s GATE Mock Exam offer?

The exam starts with the reading comprehension, followed by the written expression with then Maths and finally Abstract Reasoning. It is a great opportunity for the students to become comfortable with the exam environment and lessen any anxieties they might have about the exam.  For some it might be the first real exam they have sat and the more preparation for the actual day the better.

How can My Academy’s GATE Mock Exam help?

The University of South Australia has just completed a study on exam anxiety and states that “Preparing yourself for an exam is like an athlete preparing for a major event. Not only do you need to feel committed to the event and think positively about it, but you also need to actively prepare for it.  Exams are physically demanding as well as mentally and emotionally demanding. You will need to look after your body too if want to successfully make it through the exam period.”

The GATE mock exam is designed to give the students the much needed practise and to be as prepared as possible.  It gives the students the opportunity to experience the exam setting and develop their confidence before the actual event.  As well as practise answering the questions on the separate answer sheet, which can cause difficulties when under pressure on the day of the GATE exam.

All the students’ parents will receive the marks they have scored and a breakdown of where the scores have been achieved. Parents are then able to book in an appointment with Rachel to discuss any concerns or the best options for continued preparation for the exam.

When does My Academy run the GATE Mock Exams

The GATE mock exams run in September and November and both of these dates have different papers, so it is possible to experience the exam twice and see how many improvements have been made.  This very popular exam practise is limited to 20 participants each time.

Day 1 – 9th September 2017 – 12:00pm – 2:30pm

Day 2 – 11th November 2017 – 12:00pm – 2:30pm

Day 3 – 3rd February 2018 – 12:00pm – 2:30pm

Whether you have done no GATE preparation at all or whether you have been preparing for the last year, this course is the perfect way to wrap up all GATE preparation before the exam day.

What does My Academy’s GATE Refresher Course offer?

February is the final month to make sure all the preparation that can be done has been done before the GATE exam in March.

My Academy offers 4x 2hour (a total of 8 hours) sessions to cover all the areas of the GATE exam. This popular group course is designed to run over 4 Saturdays in February for 2 hours each week and covers each of the four areas of the GATE test as well as reiterating exam techniques and strategies.

Each week covers a different area.  Week one covers writing, this is the opportunity for the students to revise the important areas of the written expression and how to gain those much needed extra marks.  Week two covers reading and looks at how to interpret texts and use the various strategies to eliminate the wrong answers and reach the correct answer.  Week three covers Maths and gives students more practice on the GATE style of Maths problems they will face in the tight time limits.  Finally, week four covers Abstract Reasoning.  The students will experience all the different types of questions that occur in the Abstract Reasoning and have more practice on answering on the answer sheets in the tight time limits.

These courses are the perfect way to recap on all four areas of the GATE exam in the lead up to the exam date. GATE Preparation Workshops

For: Year 5 students preparing for the GATE and selective schools scholarships

What do My Academy’s GATE Preparation Workshops offer?

My Academy Perth, offers GATE exam and scholarship preparation classes to children whose parents wish them to be considered for the next round of scholarship places – for both private school and public selective schools. These group sessions cover ALL areas of the exam with a particular focus on exam strategies and techniques. Understanding exam techniques and strategies for the GATE exam is as important as the content knowledge.

The workshops will cover:

  • General time management skills;
  • Strategies for each section of the exam;
  • Practise opportunities and feedback. For example, students are only given a very short amount of time in the test for the writing section. With so many students sitting the test, it can be very hard to stand out from the crowd.

How can My Academy’s GATE Preparation Workshops help?

Our GATE preparation course will look at various ways in which students can add detail and written features to their writing that interests and impresses the marker. Importantly, many of the skills and strategies we will cover also benefit students in their general schooling, and not just for the test.

These GATE preparation workshops run at two different times in the year and cover the same content.  They are run by a qualified teacher that has successfully prepared hundreds of students for the GATE exam.

Parents will be given detailed written feedback at the completion of all of the workshops running in that month. E.g. any students attending the January GATE workshops will be given the feedback at the end of January.  This enables the marks to be compared for all students so that accurate feedback can be given comparing the marks across the cohort.

When does My Academy run the GATE preparation Workshops?

The groups are limited to 8 in a group so that all the students can have individualised attention for the strategies.

These GATE workshops are suitable for students who are entering Year 6 in February 2017 and will be sitting the exams in 2017.  You can choose the workshops you would like your child to attend.
